Spartacus was born into slavery in Thrace. We don’t know how old he was, or what skills he had, but the Thracian overseer who purchased him liked his looks and ordered him to be trained as a gladiator. Spartacus was sent to Capua, Italy where he served as part of the household guard for wealthy Roman senator Publius Lentulus Batiatus. Based on one of antiquity's most successful slave uprisings that led to the Third Servile War, Spartacus stars Kirk Douglas in his first major movie role and Tony Curtis as fellow slave Antoninus.
